Zane Lowe is an influential music broadcaster and Grammy nominated writer/producer and DJ. In 2015 he launched Beats1 for Apple and hosts a daily radio show on the international station.
Born in New Zealand – Zane got his break at Auckland music station MAX TV in the mid-nineties. In 1997 he arrived in London armed with his show-Ââ€reel and little else. After slinging music at the record and tape exchange in London’s Notting Hill, Zane was asked to cover for Eddy Temple Morris on MTV’s Up For It Live.
What followed was a contract at the station and a permanent show Gonzo, which went on to gain cult status with its infamous brown couch and unedited, candid conversations about music. The show featured guests such as Paul McCartney, REM and the Foo Fighters.
Lowe started his radio career hosting XFM’s Music Response in London and moved to BBC Radio 1’s Flagship slot in 2002, showcasing the hottest new music from around the world. The Zane Lowe Show would eventually become the most important new music show in the UK, introducing exciting new music to the world including, amongst others, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, The Killers and Ed Sheeran.
The Zane Lowe Show’s global profile was enhanced by regular features, including ‘Hottest Record in The World Today’ and the Masterpieces series. By 2014 the name Zane Lowe was synonymous with music broadcasting and he completed a series of exclusive long-play interviews with Jay Z, Eminem, Kanye West, Chris Martin and Rick Rubin.
Both Zane and his show have been widely recognised at the UK Radio Academy Awards, the show has won Specialist Music Programme multiple times and Zane has taken Gold for Music Broadcaster of The Year an unprecedented 4 times. Zane also won the NME Award for Radio 6 consecutive times (it would be nicknamed the Zane Lowe Award and has not been awarded to anyone since 2008).
Zane has appeared in a number of music documentaries including Metallica’s ‘Some Kind Of Monster’ and more recently as narrator of the full length documentary for director Alex Dunn.
Lowe is also a successful international DJ and consistently takes top billing at the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, including, amongst many others, Coachella, Future Music Festival (Australia) and Glastonbury. He has also toured the world with artists such as Skrillex, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy and The Weeknd.
As well as having a hectic touring schedule, Zane has also worked as a prolific songwriter and producer for a slew of chart topping artists including Chase & Status, Tinie Tempah, and Example, and was recently nominated for a Grammy for his writing and production on Sam Smith’s Grammy winning debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’.
